Why You Need To Make This Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

  • Uses shortcuts that save time: This recipe starts with cooked chicken and pantry staples, which means less prep and fewer steps when you are already stretched thin.
  • Everyone actually eats it: The combo of chicken, bacon, ranch, and tater tots is familiar and reliable, so you are not making separate meals or dealing with complaints at the table.
  • Easy to scale up or down: You can double the recipe for leftovers or scale it back without changing how it comes together, which makes planning ahead much simpler.

Sometimes you just want something easy, delicious, and comforting, and that is exactly where this bacon chicken ranch tater tot casserole comes in. It is definitely not trying to be healthy, and it may not be the best thing for you, but it is absolutely delicious and worth it. I also love how well tater tots work as a casserole topping, just like they do in my Sloppy Joe Casserole and my Mexican Tater Tot Casserole.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Cooked chicken – Rotisserie chicken or leftover baked chicken both work well. No substitutions for raw chicken since it needs to be fully cooked.
  • Cheddar cheese – Colby Jack or a cheddar blend can be used if needed.
  • Condensed cream of chicken soup – Cream of mushroom or cream of celery can be swapped if that is what you have.
  • Sour cream – Plain Greek yogurt can be used as a substitute, but the flavor will be slightly tangier.
  • Cooked bacon – Turkey bacon can be used, or leave it out if needed.
  • Milk – Any milk works here, including low-fat or dairy-free options.
  • Ranch seasoning mix – No substitutions. Use dry mix only.
  • Tater tots – No substitutions.

Mandy’s Top Tip

I like layering the cheese directly on top of the chicken mixture before adding the tater tots. This keeps the cheese gooey and melty, rather than letting it bake up crispy on top of the tots.

Tips for Success

Dice the chicken – I prefer dicing the chicken instead of shredding it, so the texture stays hearty and does not turn gummy when mixed with the other ingredients.
Use freshly shredded cheese – Cheese shredded from a block melts smoother than pre-shredded cheese.
Save some bacon for the top – Sprinkling bacon over the tater tots adds texture and keeps the bacon from getting lost in the sauce.
Spread the tater tots evenly – Laying the tots in a single, even layer helps them bake at the same rate and crisp up properly.
